When choosing a construction partner, who actually performs the work matters.

At East & Westbrook Construction, self-perform capabilities have been part of how we build since we were founded in 1977. By executing key scopes of work with our own experienced crews, we maintain greater control over safety, quality, scheduling, and coordination throughout a project. For our clients, this means fewer handoffs, direct communication, and a construction partner aligned on project expectations from the start.

What Does Self-Perform Construction Mean?

Self-performing means a contractor completes specific scopes of work within an overall construction project using its own workforce rather than subcontracting those scopes to outside companies. At East & Westbrook, one of our strongest self-perform capabilities is industrial and commercial concrete. Our concrete teams have extensive experience in all areas of structural concrete construction, including various types of foundations, various types of flatwork, structural walls, elevated structural slabs, tilt panel structures, press pits, and other highly complex concrete scopes. We also support projects through in-house steel fabrication, including structural, embedded, custom, and miscellaneous steel fabrication. Our fabrication team works alongside our engineering and field teams from initial shop drawings and layout through fabrication, finishing, and field installation. This combination lets E&W directly control critical portions of a project rather than managing them from a distance.

Greater Control Over the Schedule

On a construction project, one delay can affect the entire schedule. Self-performing key scopes of work gives our project teams another level of control over manpower, sequencing, and scheduling. Instead of relying entirely on outside subcontractor availability, E&W specializes in coordinating our own crews around project-specific needs.

This becomes especially valuable in active industrial and manufacturing environments, where construction crews may need to work around production schedules, shutdowns, equipment installation, or other operational requirements. Our project management and field teams constantly communicate directly with the people performing the work, helping identify challenges earlier and keeping everyone focused on ensuring project schedules are maintained.

Quality and Safety from the Start

Self-performing key scopes of work gives East & Westbrook greater control over two things that matter on every project: safety and quality.

Concrete is where E&W got its start nearly five decades ago, and that experience continues in the field today. Our crews are involved throughout the process, from formwork and reinforcement to concrete placement, finishing, and saw cutting, working alongside our project management, safety, and quality teams.

Having one organization plan, manage, and perform the work creates clear communication and accountability from the start. Quality isn't something we only check at the end of a project, and safety isn't a separate step in the process. We build both into how we plan and perform work each day. This consistency helps our teams identify challenges earlier, coordinate work more effectively, and achieve our commitments from planning through completion. For our clients, it means greater visibility into the work being performed and a team that stands behind the finished product.

Built for Complex Work

The benefits of self-perform construction matter most when the work is not straightforward.

Industrial and manufacturing projects can require specialized foundations, deep pits, equipment bases, containment systems, and concrete constructed to tight tolerances. Commercial projects may require large concrete placements, structural slabs, or coordination between multiple trades and building systems. These complex scopes of work require field experience. By combining our self-perform expertise with our General Contracting and Design-Build services, E&W brings a unique advantage to every project. We not only manage the overall project but also understand firsthand what it takes to build critical scopes of work in the field.

One Team. More Accountability.

Self-performing is not about doing everything ourselves.

It is about having the people, experience, and resources to directly perform the scopes of work where E&W can bring the most value. It is also about knowing when the right subcontractor or specialty partner should be part of the project. This balance allows us to provide clients with a single construction partner while maintaining the specialized expertise each project requires. Our goals remain the same: build safely, maintain quality, and deliver the performance our clients expect.
